A common question that many people ask is ‘why take supplements, do they even work and am I wasting my money?  All good questions that begin with explaining the difference between pharmaceutical medication and supplementation.

Prescription medication, while absolutely essential in some instances, is designed to take over the function of a particular activity performed by a specific organ.   In the case of organ failure, trauma or genetic predisposition, we are blessed to have the miracle of modern medicine at our disposal.  

Supplements are primarily designed to give your body a boost in times of need.  It’s like a gentle reminder or a kick up the bum for your body to restore balance.  You may be depleted of nutrients, experiencing pain, inflammation, headaches or fatigue.  Maybe your diet hasn’t been so great lately and you are under a lot of stress, both of which will leave you feeling depleted, possibly anxious and just not feeling like you are running on all cylinders.

Not all supplements are the same either!  You really do get what you pay for, so wasting your money on cheap brands that contain mainly fillers will not only drain your pocket but it will also leave you with the impression that supplements don’t work.

So what is the solution?  Rather than just guess and self prescribe, it is always best to seek some professional help.  That way you will get to the bottom of your problems sooner, hopefully with some specific testing, and targeted treatment which will actually work.

Quality supplements can have such a positive effect on our sense of wellbeing, our physical and emotional health, because when we give our body the nutrients its needs, it is very clever at utilising those nutrients where they are needed most and begin the process of restoration and healing.

The best supplements are those made from whole foods, concentrated doses of nutrients from nature that your body recognises and can absorb quickly and efficiently.

Of course it is important to not treat supplements like a ‘magic pill’ either.   Your best health outcomes will always be achieved through consistent lifestyle measures like, daily movement, a whole food diet, adequate water intake, good toilet habits, some sun exposure and healthy relationships with family and friends.

Balance is the key word here and this can be achieved through recognising when you need some support. Get in tune with how your body works and what symptoms are presenting. Don’t wait until it’s too late as that may only delay the healing process.  

Supplements can absolutely give you back your sense of self, relieve you of pain and help you get back to doing the things you love sooner. What is your body trying to tell you?
