Change Phases of Life

As woman, we experience a diverse range of stages throughout our life. Each of these stages is highlighted by significant events and bodily changes. Scientifically these stages are categorised by considerable hormonal changes and are generally divided into; infancy, puberty, reproductive age, climacteric period, and elderly years.

More often than not, in western culture, ageing is seen in a negative light. Therefore, it is shied away from, hidden and disguised, not discussed and definitely not celebrated.

But did you know, your psychological wellbeing actually peaks later in life, sometimes not until your eighties! Each stage of life comes with unique benefits, experiences and changes.

Adolescence to Young Woman
Age Range: 12 - 25

Entering adolescents is the first time we experience significant physiological changes due to a massive shift in our hormones. The journey from child to teen sees changes to our bodies, emotions, cognitive responses and, of course, marks the beginning of our menstrual cycle. This stage is a dramatic period of growth and change.

As we shift from teens to young adults, we may feel "all grown up," but our bodies are still working just as hard as they did through our adolescent years. During this phase, our bodies produce hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and androgen at peak levels in preparation for reproduction.

Adulthood and Parenthood
Age Range: 25 - 39

This is the stage of life that we live, play and work hard. So whether you focus on your career, are travelling the world or raising a family, we expect a lot from your body. Luckily, our muscle mass and bone density have never been stronger, our mental stamina is at its peak, and our menstrual cycle ebbs and flows naturally.

As woman, we are blessed with the ability to bring life into the world. Whether you choose to be a mother or not, our bodies are designed to bear children. As we enter the next stage of our life, our bodies are physically working at their most optimal.

Changes & Highlights

Perimenopause
Age Range: 40 - 53

Perimenopause means "around menopause" and refers to the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause, marking the end of the reproductive years. Think of it as the start of puberty but in reverse. When we were teenagers, our hormones kicked in, and we started to bleed. We have passed our best childbearing years, and the hormones are winding down.

The primary female hormone, estrogen, rises and falls unevenly during perimenopause. As a result, your menstrual cycles may be irregular, and you may also experience menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, sleep problems and vaginal dryness.

Although your body is going through a significant shift, studies have shown that this is the phase of life we accomplish the most career-wise.

Changes & Highlights

Menopause
Age Range: 53 - 60

Menopause officially occurs when you stop menstruating. The symptoms experienced during perimenopause generally carry through into menopause. However, during this phase, we see the most significant physical changes to our bodies. If perimenopause is the equivalent of the beginning of puberty in reverse, menopause is smack-bang in the middle. Our breasts grow and become tender; we get cramps, headaches, night sweats, and even acne. Menopause can be a physical, mental and emotional upheaval with far-reaching effects. Luckily, most women find that they have more resources to lean on during this phase, more freedom and time to themselves and a sense of resilience thanks to previous life experience.
